The Merry Month of May

Thanks to all our friends and supporters, May was a wonderful month for The Sophia Way.

GiveBIG
The GiveBIG fundraiser early in May, whereby contributions were partially matched by The Seattle Foundation, was a success. The campaign generated over $9,000 to help The Sophia Way serve homeless women on the Eastside. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this great fundraiser for The Sophia Way.

Mother-Daughter luncheon
Unity of Bellevue hosted a Mother-Daughter luncheon, featuring a talk by The Sophia Way board member Karina O'Malley. We understand that many hats were worn and a good time was had by all.

Sophia's Place at St. Luke's
Sophia's Place is our project that will double the number of beds we have available to serve homeless women on the Eastside. We're excited to announce that we've completed the permitting process and have been granted all the necessary permits for the projects.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this project and especially those who helped guide us through the permitting process.

July events
Summer will be here before you know it (once we get on the other side of typically cold and rainy June). There are several events happening...we hope you will join us at:

  • July 4th: We'll have a booth at the Symetra Bellevue Family Fourth in Bellevue's Downtown Park. The large park gets filled with families and music and fun and is a great place to spend the day (and part of the night to watch the fireworks!). Stop by and say "Hi"!
  • July 10th: Sponsored by Intelius, Summer Outdoor Movies in the Park is another event the entire family can attend, and also happens at Bellevue's Downtown Park. Join us to watch Puss in Boots and raise awareness of homelessness on the Eastside.

Thank you for all you do to support us,.

Annual Report, 2011

As we at The Sophia Way reflect on our many accomplishments of 2011 we are so thankful for all the assistance we have received in helping us achieve our goals of providing safe shelter, warm meals, case management and life skills to homeless women. Our accomplishments would not be possible without the many volunteers and donors who have made this work possible.

Walking with women on their journey from homelessness to independent life fills each of us with a gratifying sense of purpose and satisfaction that all of us are making a difference in our community. We are proud that we weathered the great recession but know we could not have done so without your support.

We are filled with continued prospects of hope that 2012 promises for our clients. Thank you on behalf of everyone at The Sophia Way and on behalf of our clients, the women we are proud to serve.

Sophia’s Place at St. Luke’s, Bellevue, WA

The Sophia Way is very happy to announce that we are very close to beginning the long-awaited process of building a new shelter for homeless women. St. Luke’s in Bellevue has generously donated the necessary space for this very worthy endeavor. Sophia’s Place will provide shelter to homeless women with additional living and work space for their convenience, safety and comfort while doubling our capacity to provide overnight shelter for homeless women.

Our new shelter will provide women with the following:
  • 21 Sleeping Cubicles that provide raised beds for increased access for the elderly and those who are physically challenged, along with areas designated for personal belongings
  • Dedicated classroom space for skills training, counseling and coaching experiences
  • A dining facility, laundry room, and complete hygiene facilities
  • On site offices for staff to improve effectiveness of supervision and counseling
  • The shelter will provide safety, a sense of comfort, security and privacy for our client
We would like to thank the wonderful individuals, public funders, faith organizations, foundations, businesses/corporations and community groups for their dedication and profound generosity. Without all of you, Sophia’s Place would not be a reality for the women we are proud to serve.

Also, Sophia’s Place will sponsor our partner, The YWCA Daytime Drop-In Center at St. Luke’s. We look forward to growing our partnership with the YWCA as we continue to increase the programs and services we can provide to women in need.

With gratitude,

Helen Leuzzi

Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG, May 2nd

Give bigA Huge THANK YOU to all of our Supporters!
The final numbers have yet to arrive, but The Sophia Way would like to express our deep gratitude for everyone who donated on May 2nd as a part of the Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG charitable event! We are so grateful for your support of homeless women in our community and are excited about what this means in terms of increasing our services to our clients.

Overall, the GiveBIG event raised $7.4 million that will benefit organizations and people in our community! $7.4 Million represents a significant number of caring hearts within a 24-hour period! KUDOS to all of you who participated in this wonderful philanthropic event.

We look forward to your continued support as we continue to grow in our ability to provide more needed services to homeless women in our community. We will be opening Sophia’s Place sometime this summer which will enable us to provide raised beds and private cubicles for our clients…And, opening Sophia’s Shoppe in the Fall which will provide employment training for our clients. All of our accomplishments could not happen without your ongoing support and dedication. THANK YOU.
